Brace yourself for another round of increased in rice prices. This is, perhaps the the third or fourth times in two month. A manager of a supermarket in town this morning told us that they will start selling rice (of all class/grade) at a higher price starting today. If you bought a 10kg-bag of rice at RM20 yesterday, today it will cost you RM40.

Rice prices will be hiked again today.

On June 1, the eve of Gawai Festival, Bernas announced that the price of Super 15% rice was fixed at RM1.80 per kilogramme for the areas of Kuching, Sibu and Miri in Sarawak and Kota Kinabalu, Tawau, Sandakan and Lahad Datu in Sabah.

Bintulu is not mentioned in the above list of towns that enjoyed a fixed RM1.80 Kg rice! Why? We don’t know.

Rumors also fast spreading around town, that by midnight today, fuel prices will also be increased? The quantum of the increase is not known. However we’ve yet to get the confirmation from the local Domestic Trade and Consumer Ministry officer of the rumors as it is still a public holidays in Sarawak.

Government today announced that price control on fuel will be lifted in August this year. The retail cost of fuel will be determined by global market prices! Likely to be more expensive.
