An Umno member here was charged at the Sessions Court yesterday with two counts of bribing an Umno branch chief with RM700 to support him for a division head post.
Seremban Umno division vice-chief Mohd Nor Awang, 47, was alleged to have bribed Taman Zaiton Indah Umno branch chief Rezwat Shahril Zainal Ariffin to nominate him as a candidate for the Seremban Umno division chief’s post at the branch meeting on Aug 3.
He was alleged to have given Rezwat :
– RM200 inside a car, registration number NBK 16, at a parking lot behind Restoran Negeri, Taman Catleya, in Senawang at 12.20pm on Aug 1; and,
– RM500 inside the same car at the car park behind Centre Point Mall Seremban in Jalan Siamang Gagap at 4.30pm on Aug 2.
Mohd Nor pleaded not guilty to both charges.
Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Asnawi Abu Hanipah suggested that bail be set at RM5,000 for both charges in one surety.
Counsel Abdul Halim Lokman asked for a lower bail as his client’s wife had posted RM3,000 bail when Mohd Nor was detained by the Anti-Corruption Agency.
Judge Allaudeen Ismail set bail at RM3,500 in one surety and fixed Jan 28 and 29 next year for trial.
In another case, lorry driver, Sonamuthu Elango Veemah, 42, was charged in the same court with bribing immigration officer Mohd Imran Sulaiman with RM700 to take no action against him for carrying a passenger, Saravanan Ganga Tharan, an Indian national, who did not have a passport and whose work permit had expired.
Sonamuthu, who was not represented, was alleged to have committed the offence at Km10 Seremban-Kuala Pilah road here at 11pm on June 21, 2006.
Allaudeen set bail at RM3,500 in one surety pending mention on Oct 24.
