We could have been misled. When Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad making shocking announcement on May 19, news reports (including Malaysiakini) suggested it was only him, his wife plus couple of other old woods that are leaving Umno.

However, that’s not true. Apparently there were several Umno members who followed him according to Adib Zalkapli of Malaysia Insider:

Dr Mahathir, who left Umno in May because of a lack of confidence in Abdullah’s leadership, also revealed that his plan to rejoin the party has been derailed.

“When I left I set the condition to rejoin, but now there is another problem. I found out that when I resigned many members followed me,” he said, adding that he hoped those who left with him would also be accepted by the party.

So it wasn’t only Dr Mahathir, Dr Hasmah, Sanusi that quit Umno at that time or after May 19. Of course Umno controlled media won’t publish such story.

Meanwhile how Najib and the rest got him to change his mind is a mystery to all of us,’ said a close associate of Mr Abdullah, who added that the Premier felt betrayed by those he had trusted in Umno, including Datuk Seri Najib, and their move to force him to speed up his retirement plans
