Malaysiakini news reports said Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has checked that he is contesting the Umno deputy president’s post. The news also appear on national daily The Star online here:

Muhyiddin said he is confident that he would work well with Deputy Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak. The other contestants for the deputy president’s post are Umno information chief Tan Sri Muhammad Muhammad Taib and Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam.

Traditionally, whoever holds the Umno deputy president’s post becomes the country’s Deputy Prime Minister.

Datuk Seri Dr Zahid Hamidi who was the first to offer himself as candidate for the no.2 post, yesterday said to have withdrawn from the race.

The International Trade Minister will likely to race against colleague Minister of Rural Development Muhd Muhammad Taib, Nur Jazlan, and Melaka Chief Minister Mohd. Ali Rustam for the post.
