Although being held in moderation this year Stella Artois 5th Remote Control Power Boat Competition still attracted sizable participation including four racers from Brunei Darul Salam.

Abd. Rahman Zai who accompanied his son and three other racers from Brunei said it was a fun, family type of event that they’ve been loyally attending since the past four years.

“We’ve been participating in Bintulu Power Boat competition for the fourth times now. This is the best time to meet people especially your friends,” he said.

However it is not a cheap past time. Abd. Rahman said it cost him a few thousands to buy a boat. Asked to give any specific figures Abd. Rahman said “The boat radio control alone easily cost more than B$ 800 (or RM 1900) in Brunei.”

Another participant Mr. Tan Kian Soon from Kapit also agreed with Abd. Rahman it wasn’t cheap past time.

Although couldn’t remember how much he had spent on his hobby Tan said a complete set of the boat – boat, remote control and engine, would cost at least RM3,000-RM5,000 in Kapit.

That, he said not include boat maintenance, food and travel expenses incurred when participating in a competition.

For this year competition in Bintulu, Tan brought with him only three of his boats.

“It isn’t easy taking care these boats when I had to jump between express boat then bus to reach Bintulu.

Mr Tan was accompanied by another two racers from Kapit Mr. Ting Siu Ping and Norman Kong. Ting who were also their leader when asked on what were their chances of winning the competition quipped “honestly we are here to enjoy the races.”
