A senator on Wednesday suggested that the government appoint a minister from the Orang Asli to take care of the interest of the community.

Senator Osman Bungsu said a minister among the Orang Asli would put the community on equal terms with others.

“The Orang Asli’s needs can only be fully understood and appreciated by members of the community,” he said when debating the Supplementary Supply Bill 2009 at the Dewan Negara here.

Osman said there was justification in the request as the poverty rate among the community was still high.

The sitting continues tomorrow.
