Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) de factor leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Sunday promised to raise the native customary right land (NCR) issues faced by native communities in Sarawak to parliament next week.
NCR land issues in Sarawak must be brought to the attention of parliament because NCR-related cases brought before the court took too long to be resolved said Anwar according to Borneo Post on Monday.
Saying that he wasn’t challenging the state government but merely championing the rights of local people whose lands have been given away to the benefit of the rich towkays (land developers) while the landowners remain poor.
Anwar noted, the land issues that started more than 20 years ago in Sarawak were not only affecting the Ibans, but also the Kedayan, Malays and Orang Ulu.
Therefore he said it was time to stop the current practice where state government taking away people’s lands in the guise of bringing developments.
“As a responsible wakil Rakyat (people representative), I will bring the matter to parliament in the next sitting,” Anwar said.
Anwar at PKR national congress earlier this month said Pakatan leaders should visit Sarawak regularly as part of their battle to wrestle the state from Barisan Nasional government.
