At least 15 of a 36-doors Kayan longhouse in Tubau about 100km from Bintulu were destroyed by fire on Sunday leaving more than 100 people homeless.

Residents said they managed to save the remaining units by containing the flames using water from various sources including those in their storage tanks.

No injury was reported although only the elderly and children were at home at the time of the accident, while the rest of the villagers have gone to a nearby church.

Bintulu Fire and Rescue Department confirmed receiving a distress call at 9.45 a.m and immediately dispatched several personnel in a fire engine. They arrived at the scene at 11 a.m.

Bintulu parlimentarian Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing rushed his personal assistant and political secretary after being informed of the accident.

The amount of losses were not immediately known as the relevant authorities still access the damage and determine the cause of fire.
