We realized pedestrians in Bintulu generally, didn’t care much about their own safety after half an hour observation last weekend at one of Bintulu busiest road – the Jalan Abang Galau.
Apparently there were more pedestrians who just walked across the busy roads than those using the pedestrian bridge nearby. It make us wonder why they prefer to take the risk?
We then decided to randomly approached some of them for a brief interview. Many said it such a hassle walking up the bridge just to cross the road. Furthermore they said the bridge is too high and those carrying heavy loads just can’t use it.
Another lady (in the above photo) when told what she did was dangerous. Simply rebuked us and said “why used the pedestrian bridge, when you just can walk across the street?” and added she was in hurry to catch her bus.
We just can’t help, but said “what the hell was this one selfish jerk was thinking”. He acted as though he was walking in the park. Answering a phone call while slowly walked across the busy road after alighting from a bus causing the traffic next to him to slow down unnecessarily.
Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) could have prevented these people from crossing this street had they erected a much taller and stronger barrier similar to that erected near SMK Bintulu.
Or do we have to wait for a tragedy to happen in order doing anything about it?
