Media practitioners in Sarawak should maintain their professionalism in the dissemination of information as more sophisticated readers will be questioning their integrity, said state Housing Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said that with access to all forms of media, including news portals, blogs and You Tube videos, professionalism would determine whether the society would accept their news against the backdrop of the challenging and ever-changing environment that they operated in.
“At the end of the day, the truth will prevail and, therefore, journalists have the responsibility to give fair coverage of the subjects they are writing as readers will give the right judgment by gauging the quality of what is written,” he said at a New Year gathering organised by the Kuching Division Journalists Association (KDJA) Thursday night.
He commended the KDJA for its ongoing efforts to upgrade the professionalism of its members and for its contribution to the local community, including aiding the poor and needy.
The fast and efficient news coverage provided by the local print and elctronic media on the floods that hit Kuching divison, including his Satok state constituency, early this week had enabled many residents to be evacuated to relief centres on time, he said.
At the function, he presented a grant of RM30,000 from the state government for KDJA’s activities this year. – Bernama
