Some 45,000 workers in the manufacturing sector may out of a job soon as most factories will cease operations during the Chinese New Year celebrations.
Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam said this would happen because factories would shut down for two or three weeks and workers would be asked to take either paid or unpaid leave.
“This (shutdown) is because of a drop in demand for their products and because of that they (factories) have to temporarily terminate their workers,” he said after opening the Agro Explosion 2009 Seminar & Workshop here today.
He said that, as of Jan 12, 14,000 workers from various sectors lost their jobs because of the world economic slowdown, but there were some 15,000 job vacancies in various sectors registered with the ministry.
