Opinions are varied as to the causes of Barisan Nasional dismal performance at Kuala Terengganu by-election. However, the common theme of these opinions is that Barisan Nasional has not ‘changed’ despite promises to do so.
Kadir Jasin a veteran journo, put it succinctly in points:
Umno and the BN have not changed their campaign tactics and styles. It’s still the carpet bombing method;
The voters are getting more mature. They are not as easily spooked, intimidated and bribed;
They know now that the development money is their own money and are, therefore, entitled to it;
Mohd Najib, by not accepting defeat with humility, suggests the general arrogance of Umno and BN leaders and their inability to accept the fact that Umno and BN are no longer supreme;
Change or Umno and the BN will suffer further humiliation in the coming months and years, starting with the Sawarak state election
A PAS win is a rejection of BN. It is also a rejection of Abdullah Badawi for Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Salleh is Badawi’s man!
Tengku Razaleigh who has becoming more wiser since being sidelined by Umno said:
Money, machinery and incumbency could not trump the call for change. BN will lose, and will in the end lose everything, until we respond fully and sincerely. But the response from the leadership yet again is that this “should not be interpreted as voters having spurned BN.” Our leadership remains in denial. Loyal members of UMNO and the BN will feel they are on a sinking ship.
Joseph Tawie in his blog The Broken Shield said:
For the past 45 years we have been suffering and complaining: Chinese and Malay businessmen are robbed of their business opportunities, as businesses are only given to cronies of powers-that-be; the Malays and the Dayaks have their NCR land taken away and leased to giant companies for oil palm plantations, so much so that they do not have land to tilt; and some of Dayak villages and longhouses have been destroyed by these companies and others drowned due to the construction of dams, not one, but 12 dams; and how the people have suffered as a result of them being resettled in new areas. The people of Sungai Asap are a case in point.
Now we know that Najib is not well respected by the people in West Malaysia – why should Dayak give him special respect. Najib is Taib’s best friend and relative. Together they will allow more bad thing to happen to Sarawak resource and the rights of the people in Sarawak.
Pro Umno blogger Sakmongkol AK47:
The people of Terengganu have done the opposite of what Dato Najib wishes them to do. His pontificating about how to behave- humble, shake hands firmly, be folksy, wear a sarong, didn’t go down well. He has probably antagonised the Terengganu people, in sufficient number so as to cause them to go over the dark side.
Umno official propaganda machine Utusan said the low turn out was to blame.
Barisan Nasional (BN) mungkin mampu mempertahankan kerusi Parlimen Kuala Terengganu sekiranya semua pengundi kawasan tersebut yang tinggal di luar, pulang pada hari pembuangan undi semalam
Khairy a.ka. the son-in-laws as expected was quick to defend his father-in-laws and the candidate.
“… andaian kegagalan BN mengekalkan kerusi Parlimen Kuala Terengganu berpunca daripada satu gelombang besar penolakan rakyat terhadap parti juga tidak tepat kerana calon BN, Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh masih mendapat sokongan daripada lebih 30,000 pengundi.
“Tetapi kita kena muhasabah diri, kaji semula kempen, pendekatan kita termasuk iklim politik tanah air sendiri sampailah kepada isu-isu tempatan.
