Azalina Othman meteoric rise in Umno has been halted. She has failed in her bid to retain her Umno supreme council seat at yesterday Umno election, despite begging to delegates of her innocent.
Azalina is still being investigated by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for alleged money politics. One of her senior aides had also been detained for questioning before he was released. The aide was supposedly caught with RM70,000 on him.
It has been alleged that Azalina or her aides have used her ministry to canvass support for the party polls. Three MACC officers had also visited Azalina’s ministry on March 11 and took away two documents for investigation. And on March 20, MACC officers recorded a statement from her and later went to her house in Shah Alam.
Early in her career, Azalina portrayed herself as Abdullah staunchest supporter. Last year she joined Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ismail Sabri Yaakob in calling for Datuk Mokhzani Mahathir’s resignation as chairman of the Sepang International Circuit (SIC).
Azalina said in a statement she was surprised at and disappointed with Mokhzani’s stand to continue as SIC chairman when Ismail Sabri had called for his resignation yesterday citing the post as a government appointment. The spate was following Mokhzani comment on Abdullah.
In 2006 while becoming Youth and Sports Minister Azalina floated the idea of converting a rubber research institute building at Brickendonbury in Hertfordshire, London to a High Performance Sports Center. The idea shot down after widely criticised by by various people including MPs and political parties.
