Living in Bintulu isn’t all about ‘all works no play’ as it is often portrayed. If you on a look out for places sweat your body, other than going to a gym on weekend, there several places you can go.

Mountain-biking at Tanjung batu. If you have a bike, why not join a group of mountain biking enthusiasts (who called themselves Ruff Riders) riding down the steep slopes below BDA office building.

syarif-hashimThe trek which used to be venue for mountain biking race,  run parallel with a road linking BDA office with Tanjung Batu. The trek is pretty challenging with few sharp bends and high jump, suitable for a real off-road biking experience and ones of Ruff Riders Club’s favorite location.

However, if you don’t feel like risking yourself of any injury – ride on the road instead. A Ruff Riders cub member, Awang told us that there actually are few off-road biking treks near Tanjung Batu areas, offer a much more challenging ride, but less accessible.

“The trek around Taman Tumbina is more challenging and much longer compare to this (near BDA office), however it is restricted area,” he lamented.

Mountain biking enthusiast in Bintulu can contact Syarif Hashim at 012 851 2397 for further information on mountain biking activities in town.

“We are an unofficial club, we welcome anyone who enjoys biking activities to join us,” said Syarif who also own a bicycle repair shop at Kampung Baru.

The club hope BDA will provide a much better, accessible and safer place for mountain biking activities near Tanjung batu or in other location in future – to attract more people especially youth to enjoy the sports.

“This is a healthy sports that can help youth to stay away from unhealthy activities. As local authority BDA should be supportive of any healthy activities such as mountain-biking,  particularly among youth like us,” Syarif said.

Taman Tumbina Jungle Trekking – is another place you can check out. It is a popular spot for jungle trekking activities in Bintulu. The trek which is at least 5km long, cut through the thick, undulating forest next to Taman Tumbina. Obviously enough to make you feel exhausted the whole weekend!
