Weeks before sworn in as Malaysia sixth prime minister, Najib’s orchestrating took over of Perak government. Three months later, the High Court in Kuala Lumpur ruled it was illegal.
On Monday the High Court said Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin is the rightful Perak Mentri Besar, and not Barisan Nasional’s Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir.
In an immediate response, Zambry said he would apply for a stay pending appeal. This was rejected by the court. The High Court also ordered Barisan Nasional state government officials to vacate their offices immediately.
The court ruling clears the way for new elections in the state, Lim Kit Siang told Reuters.
“Nizar’s next move will be to seek the Sultan’s consent to immediately dissolve the state assembly so that we can end this stalemate in the state of Perak,” he told Reuters.
The Barisan Nasional in February enticed three opposition legislators to sit as independents, overturning the majority that the opposition People’s Alliance held in the state assembly.
