Bintulu is all set to host the 5th Borneo International Kite Festival (BIKF) 2009, that on August 2 said Hj. Ismail Hj Mohamed Hanis Chairman after chairing the festival Organizing Committee meeting at Bintulu Resident Office on Wednesday.
According to him, despite fear of the H1N1 influenza, some 16 countries have confirmed their participation while Italy, Brazil, Lebanon, Ghana and Vietnam likely to skip this year event.
Locally, 11 states have also confirmed their participation including Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, Pulau Pinang, Johor, and MAS Club.
Hj. Ismail said this year BIKF is themed around “kite for peace” and will incorporate elements 1Malaysia concept as mooted by Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak into the festival.
The week long annual event (2nd -9th August) will be held at the Bintulu old air strip will be officiate by Datuk Micheal Manyin, Sarawak Minister of Urban Development and Tourism, while Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib will be gracing the closing ceremony.
Several interesting events, cultural performances have been line-up for visitors and kite fliers including the “Jom Terbang” that will witness thousand of kites to be flown.
Borneo Kite Festival started in 2005, have become an annual event ever since. In 2008, the festival made it to Malaysia Book of Records (a local version of Guinness World Records) when a total 1655 kites were flown simultaneously.
