The Sarawak police will station 1,800 policemen to beef up security and monitor traffic flow in the city, from July 25 to 31.

The measures are in lieu of Kuching hosting the 218th meeting of the Conference of Rulers on July 29 and 30.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohmad Salleh has advised the public to take alternative routes provided and avoid using the protocol routes for dignitaries, beginning July 25.

“I advise motorists to use alternative routes and if it cannot be avoided, please follow police directions and do not leave vehicles in no-parking areas,” he said in a news conference here on Thursday.

He said protocol routes would be closed, 30 minutes before the arrival of the dignitaries.

“Motorists who go against police instructions will be compounded RM300, depending on the traffic offence. This is necessary to avoid congestion and ensure safety,” added Mohmad.

Among the roads involved are Jalan Tun Jugah, Jalan Simpang Tiga, Jalan Tabuan, Jalan Ban Hock, Jalan Bukit Mata, Jalan McDougall, Jalan Tun Openg, Jalan Satok, Jalan Tun Jugah and Jalan Tun Abd Rahman.

Besides the conference, Mohmad said the police would ensure safety and smooth traffic flow for four other events starting today, until early next week.

They are the 18th Kobe Osaka International Championships at the Unity Indoor Stadium from July 23 to 26, TV3’s Karnival Jom Heboh this weekend at the Sarawak Stadium, the Akademi Fantasia 7 Reunion Concert in Padang Merdeka on July 25 and the Crafts Exhibition at the Kuching waterfront, beginning July 27. — BERNAMA
