Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin on Monday officially opened the new Sarawak Legislative Assembly building in Petra Jaya here in a meaningful and historical ceremony which marked the country’s oldest legislature.
It was also a historical record because it was the first state assembly building opening in the country to be graced by the King and all the rulers and heads of state, or their representatives, who later signed a plaque to mark the grand occasion.
The RM300 million nine-storey building, with its distinctive “terendak” or Melanau sun hat-shaped roof located atop a hill by the bank of the Sarawak River, boasts of magnificent architecture and unique interior designs done exclusively by Uzbek artisans to reflect the confluence of cultures in Sarawak.
Tuanku Mizan, who was accompanied by the Raja Permaisuri Agong, Tuanku Nur Zahirah, earlier inspected a guard of honour mounted by the 11th Battalion Malay regiment based at Semenggok Camp here overlooking the river.
Tuanku Mizan, who will be attending the Pre-Council Meeting at the same venue tomorrow and the 218th Meeting of the Conference of Rulers on Wednesday and Thursday, will witness a special regatta and a float procession on the Sarawak river later Monday.
