Polling for the Permatang Pasir state by-election started at 8am today in eight polling centres comprising 39 polling streams.

They are SJKC Lay Keow Permatang Pauh, SMK Sama Gagah, SK Permatang Pauh, SK Permatang Pasir, SK Bukit Indra Muda, SJKC Kubang Semang, SK Seri Penanti and Sek Rendah Islam Al-Masriyah.

Permatang Pauh Umno secretary Rohaizat Othman, 38, of Barisan Nasional (BN) is locked in a straight fight with Penang PAS commissioner Mohd Salleh Man, 52.

Both candidates are not registered voters in the area.

Permatang Pasir has 20,290 voters of whom 72.36 per cent are Malays, 25.85 per cent Chinese, 1.63 per cent Indians and others, 0.16 per cent.

The Meteorological Department has forecast scattered rain in Permatang Pasir in the morning as well as in the afternoon.

The by-election is called following the death of incumbent assemblyman Datuk Mohd Hamdan Abdul Rahman of PAS on July 31. – Bernama
