The environmental and health hazard posed by heavy industrial zones such as Simalajau and Kemena Industrial Zone, in Bintulu have not been made known to the public.

Scientific studies have shown convincing correlation between air pollution health issues – a problem that likely to worsen in Bintulu in near future.

No thank to efforts setting up heavy pollution industry such as Samalaju Aluminium currently under construction in Simalajau.

Time quoted the authors of a new study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, offer several examples of this correlation, including the fact that “…after the United States’ Clean Air Act was passed in 1970, the incidence of appendicitis decreased by 14.6% from 1970 to 1984.”

That the trends seemed to fit together prompted a team of scientists from health agencies and universities across Canada to delve back into a subject that others had previously explored with inconclusive results—was pollution actually contributing to the rate of appendicitis, or was it just a coincidence?
