Thai cabinet on Tuesday approved in principle the Airports of Thailand (AoT)’s five-year (2009-2013) plan for development of the Phuket international airport which would cost 5,791 million baht (RM590mil), deputy government spokesman Wachara Kannikar said according Bangkok Post.

The plan, submitted for approval through the Transport Ministry, is intended to increase Phuket airport’s capacity from 6.5 million currently to at least 12.5 million in 2018.

Mr Wachara said there was no plan to expand the airport’s runway, as it still capable of accommodating bigger aircraft up to the size of a Boeing 747.
