The government has no intention to set up a committee to consider matters associated with Islam and other religions in the effort to overcome sensitive inter-religious issues, the Dewan Rakyat was told on Wednesday.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Dr Mashitah Ibrahim said the government was, however, always sensitive to the affairs of all communities and religions in the country.

“In terms of administration, the appointment of a minister in the prime minister’s department responsible for unity is a related matter,” she said in a written reply to N. Gobalakrishnan (PKR-Padang Serai).

Gobalakrishnan had wanted to know whether the government intended to set up a permanent committee on issues related to Islam and other religions to overcome sensitive inter-religious issues which could confuse the people.

Dr Mashitah said Article 3 of the Federal Constitution declared Islam as the official religion of the federation and Article 11 recognised the right to freedom of religion in the country.
