On average, four out of 230 persons in the Baram district have no personal identification documents such identity cards or birth certificates, said Baram Member of Parliament, Datuk Jacob Dungau Sagan Baram, on Thursday.
Sagan, who is also Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister, said the figures were based on surveys conducted by him whenever he visited his parliamentary area, which has a population of 80,000.
During his visits to the 350 settlements in the district, he usually received between three and five complaints of people not having identification cards or birth certificate, he said in his speech at the Penan Long Kevok Mykad and Birth Certificate presentation ceremony here.
He said the response he received showed that many of the applications by the population were rejected by the National Registration Department (NRD) on technical reasons.
The ceremony was officiated by Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein. Also present was state Housing Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Abang Openg.
