Datuk Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Al-Masrie, was engaged yesterday to his sweetheart of eight years, Dr Halina Mohd Yunos in a simple ceremony attended by family members at the Klana Resort, Seremban according to media reports.
Dr Sheikh Muszaphar, 38, and Dr Halina, 29, who were dressed in Malay traditional costumes were ushered by relatives separately into the Grand Klana Terrace with their entourages bearing gifts, national news agency Bernama said.
Dr Halina, dressed in a light pink beaded chiffon baju kurung, arrived at 4.20pm accompanied by family members and was soon followed by Dr Sheikh Muszaphar who was looking his best in a songkok and grey baju Melayu.
Dr Sheikh Muszaphar’s party then officially asked for his future bride’s hand in marriage. After a brief exchange of pleasantries and pantun, the bride-to-be’s party consented to the request for marriage.
Also present were Dr Sheikh Muszaphar’s father Datuk Sheikh Mustapha Abdul Shukor and Dr Halina’s father Lt Col (Rtd) Mohd Yunos Ali.
Dr Sheikh Muszaphar, speaking to reporters later said he was happy to finally have the engagement which was supposed to have taken place before his voyage to space.
“I had to defer it then as the training schedule was too tight. I also had other commitments then,” said Dr Muszaphar who has two elder brothers and a younger one.
The couple first met when Halina was an undergraduate at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia where Dr Sheikh Muszaphar was a lecturer.
