Information Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim told Malaysians, especially Muslims to avoid being totally immersed in the internet culture, especially Facebook and Twitter at a seminar in Seremban on Saturday.
He said facilities like internet cannot be accepted totally because it is a form of business introduced by the West and Malaysian Muslims just mere users.
He added that Malaysians who used internet services on social networking sites should be careful with what they see and hear.
“We must be strong in our believes and culture because the identity and image of our country depends on us,” Dr Rais said, according to Bernama.
“They are just selling Facebook, Twitter, L-Band and various other services, even through space, as a product but we do not do such business. We accept all this in a state of cultural shock,” he said.
The Information Minister has slightly more than 300 fans on Facebook and has not taken up tweeting on Twitter.
Ironically, his boss Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is an avid user of twitter – who tweeted almost daily. At the time of publication Najib has more than 8,800 followers on Twitter and Facebook 73,362 fans.
