Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) had chosen former de facto Law Minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim as its candidate for the Hulu Selangor by-election anticipating a fierce fight.
PKR adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the party selected Zaid because he was a principled man, adding that he even resigned as Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department when he could not agree with the Govern ment then.
“In the history of our politics not many have the wills to sacrifice his position to defend the ‘rakyat’ rights,” Anwar said to nearly 5,000 supporters in Serendah, Selangor on Tuesday night.
“He is a rare politicians – someone you couldn’t find in UMNO.
Anwar also refuted claims that Zaid was not a local, as “he has been living in Selangor for 30 years”.
“Zaid served well when he was the Kota Baru MP,” he pointed out.
Selangor Umno, Anwar claimed, felt threatened when speculations floated around that Zaid could be the PKR candidate.
Zaid, who made his maiden speech before a crowd, declared that he was not an outsider.
“I know the problems in Selangor, I know the problems in Hulu Selangor. I know the problems faced by the poor and Felda settlers,” he said.
The Hulu Selangor seat fell vacant following the death of PKR MP Datuk Dr Zainal Abidin Ahmad on March 25.
