Sarawak Chief Minister Official car Mercedes SEL 600

Couple of years ago newly appointed Terengganu Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said was heavily criticized, accused of extravagant for purchasing 14 Mercedes E200 Kompressor cars at RM3.43mil for the use of its state executive councillors and senior officials.

Each of the E200 Kompressor cost RM245,000.00 – a paltry compare to Mercedes 600 SEL car used to chauffeur Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Taib Mahmud during his visit to Tatau last week.

Sarawak Chief Minister alighted from his official car Mercedes SEL 600 during visit to Tatau on April 28, 2010.

To put it in perspective – we contacted a car dealer to inquire about the car current price. Unfortunately, they too have no idea how much it cost – but only said “it’s probably the only Mercedes SEL 600 in the whole of Sarawak!”

Then we googled for Mercedes cars 2010 price list and here is one we found by The Star Motoring. Again the car is not listed.

But, so far we have not found any state Menteri Besars and Chief Ministers using the car – including our Prime Ministers (from Mahathir, Abdullah to Najib). Many of them either using the national car proton Perdana, Chancellor or Toyotas.

As Mat Said – the current Terengganu Menteri Besar as mentioned earlier on has learnt – Mercedes only reserved for foreign dignitaries – not for people of his stature.

Sarawak is the second poorest states in Malaysia - above Kelantan. Datuk Nik Aziz, Kelantan MB knows that's why his official car is only the national car Perdana Executive

Perhaps, Sarawak chief minister is difference or slightly special. Najib’s proton chancellor car for example still bear an official registration number – look at this Chancellor 11 and also his proton executive WRP 11.

Kelantan Menteri Besar Nik Aziz official car registration number is DBA 8668. Sarawak CM official car bears no registration number only ‘YAB KETUA MENTERI SARAWAK’!

Then, again that’s perhaps not against any laws but seeing a state leader – who has no qualm being chauffeured in a luxury car to visit small town where its folks’ income is far below their state per capita income (of RM23,796) is a real disgust.
