Election Commission (EC) state director Datuk Takun Sunggah insisted news reports of a big jump in number of Dayak voters circulating in Sibu ahead of the May 16 by election as mere rumor.

He told the Star on Tuesday there was only 1,016 total increase in voters in Sibu. They comprise 148 Dayaks, 173 Malay or Melanau and the rest are mainly Chinese.

Takun said the latest total number of registered voters in Sibu was 54,695 – in the 2008 general election electrol roll there was 53,679.

The state EC director was commenting on reports that there was sudden increase of 4,000 Dayak voters in Sibu.
