SIBU – The Election Commission (EC) will investigate a claim by the Sibu Election Watchers (SEW), that there are 209 voters in the parliamentary constituency here who are more than 100 years old.
Sarawak EC Director Datuk Takun Sunggah said the Sibu parliamentary by-election would use the 2009 electoral roll which was updated on April 9 this year.
“I don’t know which (electoral) roll they are using but we will check first,” he told reporters after a media briefing on the Sibu parliamentary by-election, here today.
Yesterday, the Sibu Election Watchers was set up as a loose NGO to observe the Sibu by-election.
Its coordinator, Wong Meng Chuo said the SEW, with 22 members, would monitor the nomination process, campaigning and polling for the by-election.
The by-election is being held following the death of the incumbent Sibu Member of Parliament, Datuk Robert Lau Hoi Chew, who was also the Deputy Transport Minister, on April 9.
The EC had set May 8 as nomination day while polling will be held on May 16. — BERNAMA
