SHAH ALAM — Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has suspended the titles “Datuk” and “Datin Paduka” conferred respectively on former transport minister Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik and former Port Klang Authority general manager O.C. Phang.

State Secretary Datuk Ramli Mahmud said in a statement that the sultan made the order in the wake of the charge against Dr Ling and Phang.

In July, Dr Ling pleaded not guilty to a charge of deceiving the government into purchasing land in Pulau Indah involving a sum of RM1.08 billion eight years ago.

Phang was charged with three counts of criminal breach of trust involving a total of RM254.84 million in December last year.

“The Sultan of Selangor made the decision after considering that the charges against both of them are serious and involve the interest of the public and the country,” he said, adding that the decision was made at a meeting of the Selangor Royal Assembly on Aug 19.

Dr Ling was conferred the Datuk Paduka Mahkota Selangor, which carries the title Datuk in 1992 while Phang was conferred in 2001.
