Six houses went down to ashes leaving at 38 people homeless when fire broke out at a squatter colony near Sg. Plan today
The 4.00pm fire, this evening sent woman and children running out of their home with whatever little belongings they could lay their hands on.
There were hardly any men around as they were away at work and returning home to see result of the blaze – crying family members, skeletal remains of what used to be their home.
Firemen coming in two fire engines managed to bring down the blaze under control within 15-minutes and totally extinguished it an hour later.
“We have to use relay pumping due to the distance of the existing fire hydrant which is about 1300ft from the scene,” said Bintulu Zone Fire and Rescue department chief Gregory Kurung Suwen.
The squatter known as Hock Peng is home to hundred of families and has only a footpath link, no road. At the scene were Kidurong State Assemblyman Chiew Ching Sing, representatives of political parties and government agencies.
The actual cause of the fire is still being investigated.
