The Bukit Gelugor by-election on May 25 will be contested by candidates from at least two parties – Pas and Parti Cinta Malaysia (PCM)
Both PCM’s Datuk Huan Cheng Guan and PAS’ Mohamed Nabi Bux Mohd Nabi Abdul Sathar today announced their intentions to contest the seat which fell vacant following the death of its member of parliament, Karpal Singh in a car accident on April 17.
The Election Commission has fixed May 12 as the nomination day for candidates and polling day on May 25.
In the 2013 general election, Karpal Singh defeated BN candidate Teh Beng Yeam with a majority of 42,706 votes.
Huan, 53, who is PCM vice-president, announced his candidature at a press conference here today while Mohamed Nabi Bux, 63, a Pas member in Gombak, told reporters as such after submitting his candidacy papers to the EC office here.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, when commenting on Mohamed Nabi Bux’s intentions, said anyone could contest as this was a democratic country. Lim said the Pas member was not contesting on a party ticket but as an independent.
“This is a democratic country and anyone can contest regardless of which party….any member of any party can contest as an independent, not on the party (ticket),” he said.– BERNAMA
