It cost Malaysian taxpayers RM240 million to upgrade but now the Melaka International Airport is almost deserted – no commercial flights had taken off since March 15 this year!
Malaysia Airports Annual Reports 2013 revealed Melaka International Airport handled a total 21,637 passengers (11,512 arrivals / 10,125 departures) in 2013 a whooping 37% dropped from 2012’s 34,355 passengers.
In comparison Bintulu Airport handled a record total 779,774 passengers!
Melaka State exco member Lim Ban Hong, who oversees the transport and project recovery portfolio, said they had been talking to airlines. But all those talks were in vain.
Even Melaka government attempted to lure medical tourism from Indonesia had failed. Instead the Indonesians – fly to KLIA and travel by road to Melaka.
