Updated: Thick plumes of smoke billowing from a fire at a dumping ground in Lutong Saturday evening could be seen as far as 20km away and destroyed the one-acre site.

According nearby residents the fire broke out around 2pm. Firemen arrived at the scene around 3pm Miri Fire and Rescue chief Law Poh Kiong told Thesundaypost.

Nearby residents said the fire started from nearby bushes before spreading to the site used as a dumping ground for industrial waste.

Several light explosions were heard during the incident.

Law said the burning material was not classified as hazardous waste and no casualty was reported.
