BELAGA: The faith of Christians here is said to be ‘threatened’ by a certain group of outsiders converting them to Islam by offering RM6,000 to each person, according to an observer Abun Sui Anyit.
Abun said the group is now actively converting longhouse dwellers.
It was said that the group will be visiting Punan Bah, Punan Biau, Uma Tanjung and Nanga Merit in the name of goodwill visits and welfare, he stressed.
The activities of the group now could not be denied by the authorities as the activities and movement have gone viral in Facebook and WhatsApp, said Abun through a press release yesterday.
“It cannot be denied that the majority of the longhouse dwellers who got visited, and would be visited by these outsiders, are the hardcore poor. With such money they might be easily influenced and hoodwinked,” he said.
“Therefore as one of the Christian observers in the area, I am concerned about these outsiders’ movement and their tactics at the expense of Christians,” he said, adding that he hoped none of the Christians were lured by money.
Abun thus urged the outsiders to stop their activities, especially through devious means. He also urged the relevant authorities to probe the suspicious activities of these outsiders.
“We believe the government and Welfare Department especially can help the poor villagers and longhouse residents in terms of their general welfare and well-being and not just leave the matter to these outsiders to act on their whims and fancy,” he said. — The Borneo Post
