Sarawak government announced electricity tariff revision beginning January 2015.
Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem in his winding-up speech at the State Legislative Assembly said it was designed to help the lower and middle income groups.
The revision can be summarized as follows:
Monthly usage of 150kw and below free;
150kw-200kw- 30% off;
201-300kw- 20% off;
301-400kw- 10% off;
400kw above will enjoy reduction of tariff between 2-4%
A total of 130,000 customers will enjoyed free electricity under the new tariff.
Sarawak Energy Berhad estimates a total 240,000 customers (or nearly 50% of its customers) will enjoy tariff reduction between 20% and 40%.
“It shows the Chief Minister is listening to the plights of Sarawakians” said DAP Sarawak Youth Secretary, Tonny Ung commenting on the announcement.
The party earlier this year gathered some 113,397 signatures of which over 12,000 were from Bintulu to petition for the reduction.
Several state ministers including Awang Tengah said SESCO would be bankrupt with electricity tariff in the state to be reduced.
