Health officers inspecting one of the kopitiam in Matang, Kuching

A spot checked by Health Department in Matang discovered that 3 out of 5 eateries in Matang serving customer poisonous tea flavored wood powder passing as tea.

“Three out of five premises selling drinks in Matang Jaya area were found to be using this fake tea powder in spot checks carried out today (Wednesday) ,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday.

Sabri said the tea flavoured wood powder was harmful to the health and he feared that coffee shops and stalls found to be serving customers this poisonous concoction was just the tip of the iceberg.

The Health Ministry believed the practiced is widespread.

“We believe that besides these three premises, there are still many other food and drink outlets throughout Kuching using it because it is cheap,” he said.

Health officers had taken samples of tea served at the premises for analysis and confiscated the rest of the tea powder to be produced as evidence in prosecuting those involved in the scam.

Sabri added that the Health Department found out about the tea flavoured wood powder earlier and had given warning to those serving it as tea to withdraw the product but many ignored its directive.

Why eateries still serving the tea despite warning from Health Ministry? Because it is a cheap.
