A college student was arrested in an apartment at Samajaya today to facilitate investigation of a newborn baby found in a dumpster earlier in the morning.

The body, stuffed in a red box, was discovered by a cleaner while throwing rubbish into the dumpster around 10am today.

She immediately alerted the police of the shocking incident.

Sarawak CID chief SAC Datuk Dev Kumar confirmed the incident to Sarawakiana – a local website, and identified the 23-year old suspect, as a final year Diploman student from Belaga.

Kuching district police chief Assistant Commissioner Abang Ahmad Abang Julai told Berita Harian the incident investigation will be in accordance with Section 309 (a) of the Penal Code.

But SAC Dev Kumar in a statement said they are initially investigating the case under section 318 of the Penal Code for concealment of birth by disposal of a dead body.

He cautioned “if the police find evidence the baby was alive when she was dumped, police will recommend the suspect to be charged with murder.

Police initial investigation revealed the baby was delivered about 6.30am today in a bathroom of an apartment unit.

This is the first case of baby dumping reported in Sarawak this year. In 2016 Sarawak recorded 10 cases of baby dumping.
