A Malaysian navy ship KD Perantau en route to Lumut naval base from Sepanggar, Sabah reported one of its crew fell into the sea off the coast of Bintulu around 9am yesterday.

The unnamed crew member was last spotted onboard the ship around 7.15am according to media reports.

Rear Admiral Datuk Abdul Rahman Ayob said a search and rescue operation have been set up in the Maritime Region 2, Kota Kinabalu RMN Base.

“The search at sea carried out by KD Selangor and Fennec helicopters, in addition to the assistance of maritime vessels (KM) Tabah owned Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) based in Bintulu.

“In addition, Maritime Region 2 also asked for air support from the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF),” Harian Metro reported yesterday.

It is understood that the incident is thought to occur in waters about 90 nautical miles southwest of Bintulu.
