Can police check your mobile phone during a road block?

“No, they (police) cannot just ask for your phone unnecessarily unless you’re a suspect or suspicious character,” said Kuching District police chief ACP Abang Ahmad Abang Julai, reports The Borneo Post

“When under investigation, we do ask for their phones,” the daily newspaper quoted Abang as saying and added that “police cannot ask for your phone unnecessarily.”

According to ACP Abang, the police also had not issued any instruction to policemen to check people’s phone during a road block.

ACP Abang was commenting on a viral recording alleging police perusing through a driver mobile phone in a road block.
