The Pakatan Rakyat, at its first convention on Saturday, unveiled that as part of its policy it will set up a committee to have a mechanism to implement policies agreed upon by the three parties of the coalition, namely Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), DAP and Pas.

PKR advisor, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, said the mechanism was to promote Pakatan Rakyat’s policies through the democratic process, including strengthening democracy at the local government level.

He said one of Pakatan Rakyat’s policy was to strengthen local government democracy and enhance and make effective the delivery system and ensure transparency at all levels democratically.

Anwar also denied that the three parties were not committed to having local government elections if they came into power as the term ‘local government elections’ was not in their policy but was replaced by the term ‘strengthening local government democracy’.

“Among the three parties there is no question about us opposing democracy, no question of opposing the election process. What comes up is the way and manner to implement this,” he said at a news conference after the one-day convention.

Meanwhile, Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat said he feels that he lives in a new world given the cooperation among Pas, DAP and Parti Keadilan Rakyat in the Pakatan Rakyat.

“I feel I am in a new world in line with my knowledge and faith,” he said in his speech at the convention.

On a separate note, DAP chairman Karpal Singh said the coalition accepted Anwar as the general leader of the Pakatan Rakyat. — BERNAMA
