Racism and racial discrimination do exist – either we admit it or not. Last year a relative by the name of Jok decided to upgrade his car.
After five years driving a Kancil – he felt it would be nice driving a bigger car. So he decided to buy a truck - a Toyota Hilux – which seems to be everyone’s favorite in town.
So we went to a Toyota dealer shop at BDA Light Industrial Estate – as we knew someone at that dealer. Unfortunately he wasn’t in the office at time
I said since “Mark isn’t in yet – why not wait for him to come.”
But Jok said – “we can deal with other sales adviser – after all they work for the same company”.
So we walked in. Upon entering the office we’re greeted by charming, talkative lady – surname Ling. She had to be talkative, appeared friendly as that helped a lot in closing a deal.
Indeed it was. Without hesitating Joke bought a car from her and told it would be available a week before Christmas.
Two weeks later, Jok and his wife chanced upon his brother in-law – Wong while having breakfast in town. He told him, they were buying a new Toyota Hilux.
“Where do you buy it from,” his brother in-law asked.
“There’s only one Toyota dealer I know in Bintulu” he said – “from the one next to Petronas station at BDA Light Industrial Estate.”
So Wong told them he was buying the same car and was fortunate enough to have bought when the dealer was offering RM500 discount to car buyer.
Unaware of such an offer Jok asked: “Are you sure, they offering RM500 discount. I just signed the deal a day after you bought yours – nobody told me of such offer.”
Wong said he was sure and asked Jok to call Toyota himself again – just in case they have forgotten about it. So he called up Ling – the sale adviser he bought the car from.
“Mana ada discount woh,” was Ling replied and repeatedly told him there was no such offer.
Jok then hang up and said “Tidak apa RM500 saja itu,”. But his wife was apparently unhappy and coaxed Wong to accompany them visiting Toyota office to confront Ling.
“Kenapa lu tidak kasi tau kami – ada discount. Ohh lu ingat kita bukan Cina lu suka hati tipu meh. Nasib baik saya punya abang ipar kasi tau – kalau tidak kita sudah kena tipu.” she said.
A red-faced Ling admitted there was indeed such discount – then with much hesitation gave them the said discount.
Isn’t it sad – there is someone out there tend to treat people differently because of their race and creed. This is the second case we came to know happened in Bintulu. The first case was involving a lady at Farley.
However labeling all Chinese as racist is very unfair – there are many become victims of racism themselves. Here is another case – truly strange but true involving a Malay lady.

Are you really surprised? There are numerous examples of Chinese who discriminate others on the basis of race and yet these very people are the first to scream RACISM when they are on the receiving end. Racism is an equal opportunity frailty, it is seen in all races.
Please check carefully before write something like this. Is it a same car type, same accessories or exactly same items and same sales person? Don’t forget sales person can deduct their commission too.
Jaga nama baik Sarawak, jgn ikut cara org seberang… siasat dulu…
Btw, I’m chinese and I have very good friends from any races in Swk
Peace
Mr Leo – thank for your concerned – btw did you read the whole thing. She admitted her guilt.
It’s the same ie, model, price, accessories and same dealer – except no discount. You’re implying we’ve not siasat? It’s a first hand account for Godness sake.
Instead of defending racism – you and all of us should condemn any form racial discrimination by anyone.
i’m a sarawakian chinese residing at BTU now. i’m sad to know of such occurence happening here also.
IMHO, in business, i believe the salesperson would want maximum profit likewise for customers, they would want most discount. on the customer side, it could be that Jok did not enquire about the discount when making the purchase or too hurriedly sign up for the offer without thoroughly negotiating for extra accessories/gift or in this case discount. i dont think this is rasicm case as it could happpen to any race.
Personally, i feel that chinese is more stingy/fussy when dealing with money.
But on the part where Ling lied on the discount when enquired, that for me is totally wrong. and if i’m in Jok’s position, i’d definitely write in a letter of complain to her boss and subsequently to consumer tribunal.
i’ve been in similar situation where i was duped into signing up for credit when my initial purpose was to sign up for home loan with a bank in bintulu. yes , the lady is chinese and i’m chinese as well. i wrote in to the bank’s HQ and receive verbal apology from all ranks regarding this matter. from now on i’d stay away from that bank, btu branch.
in case you wondered, i did not sign up for their home loan and totally cancelled TWO card under my name and my fiancee’s name.
i could not agree with Jeremy more!!!
i dont think it links with RACIST issue
world PEACE v^_^v
